Metropolite of the Diocese of Gougark Archbishop Sebouh Chouldjian, one of the natural patriarchal candidates, spoke to Agos before the election of değabah. He stated that Armenian Primate of Germany Archbishop Karekin Bekdjian should be supported in değabah election and he will come together with Armenians of Turkey as the patriarchal candidate.
Here are the highlights of the written statement of Chouldjian:
“The process of patriarchal election in Istanbul, which had been intense lately and was solved in Etchmiadzin to some extent, made us feel hopeful and optimistic. From the beginning, we were aware that difference of opinion in the society might disrupt the election process. However, today, we see that efforts of tolerance and mutual understanding emerged, which is the solution of this deadlock. In this regard, I consider the election of değabah very important.”
“Bekdjian must be supported”
“Given the unfavorable situation of two clerics from the Patriarchate of Istanbul, the following positive atmosphere and the importance of impartial result, I think that the değabah must be impartial. In this regard, I urge the clerics of the Patriarchate of Istanbul to support Bekdjian.”
“I am a candidate”
“Visiting Istanbul and other cities in Turkey and getting together with faithful people always make me happy. I am waiting for the election of değabah for meeting our society as the patriarchal candidate. After the election, the Patriarchate of Istanbul will send official letters to all patriarchal candidates and then I will get together with our people.”
