(LIVE) Operation against HDP: Co-chairs and 6 MPs arrested

HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ and HDP MPs Ferhat Encü, Selma Irmak, Abdullah Zeydan, İdris Baluken, Sırrı Süreyya Önder, Ziya Pir, Nursel Aydoğan and Gülser Yıldırım have been detained in operations around midnight.

** HDP MPs have been detained last night in police raids to the houses. HDP co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, and MPs İdris Baluken,  Gülser Yıldırım, Selma Irmak, Ferhat Encü, Nursel Aydoğan and Leyla Birlik are arrested. İmam Taşçıer, Ziya Pir and Sırrı Süreyya Önder are released. Hakkari MP Abdullah Zeydan is still under detention.

  • HDP Şırnak MP Ferhat Encü is arrested.
  • HDP Hakkari MP Selma Irmak is arrested.

  • HDP Mardin MP Gülser Yıldırım is arrested.

  • Referred to the court with arrest request, HDP Ankara MP Sırrı Süreyya Önder is released.

  • Diyarbakir MP Nursel Aydoğan and Şırnak MP  Leyla Birlik are arrested.

  • Diyarbakir MP İmam Taşçı is released after giving statement to the prosecutor.   


  • Democratic Regions Party (DBP) co-chair and former MP Sebahat Tuncel has been detained while waiting in front of Diyarbakir courthouse.   

  • HDP Deputy Chair İdris Baluken is arrested

  • Selma Irmak, Sırrı Süreyya Önder and Gülser Yıldırım are referred to the court with arrest request.

HDP calls for nationwide sit-in protests

After the detention of HDP MPs, central executive committee of the party decided to start sit-in protests in front of all the offices of HDP.

HDP Istanbul said in a statement: “We invite all the people who voted for HDP and side with democracy to stage sit-in protests in all provinces of Istanbul in order to express their democratic reactions.”

  • Danish and German Ministers of Foreign Affairs summoned their ambassadors to Turkey after the detention of HDP MPs.

  • Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım stated that the detentions were carried out in accordance with the law.

  • HDP co-chair Figen Yüksekdağ is referred to the court with arrest request.

  • HDP MPs weren't allowed to make a press statement in HDP headquarters. They read the statement in the parliament. HDP MP Mithat Sancar said: “When we said that such things didn't happened even after September 12 coup, some people were telling us that we are exaggerating. But this is the truth. There is no difference between the bombing of the parliament on July 15 and the recent detentions. Since the last night, they have been bombing the heart of the parliament and the democratic politics.

  • Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, made a statement about the detentions via her Twitter account. She wrote that they are “extremely worried.”

  • HDP Diyarbakir MP Ziya Pir is released.

  • HDP co-chair Figen Yüksekdağ and MP Gülser Yıldırım have finished giving their statements in the prosecutor's office. The prosecution will announce its decision.

Kılıçdaroğlu spoke about the detentions

  • CHP chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu spoke about the detentions in İzmir. Reacting against the detention of HDP MPs, Kılıçdaroğlu said that elected parliamentarians shouldn't be treated like this. He also stated that in a democracy, elected ones can only be removed by elections.


  • In Diyarbakir Courthouse, the police forces attacked the lawyers coming to the courthouse for defending HDP MPs. Lawyer Eser Sönmez is detained.

  • HDP MPs Leyla Birlik, Nursel Aydoğan and Ferhat Encü are taken to Şırnak.

  • Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ said that the detention orders are in accordance with the law.

  • HDP Group Deputy Chairman İdris Balüken is taken to Bingöl.

  • HDP headquarter was raided by the police last night. Early in the morning, Ankara Governor's Office closed the building.

HDP Spokesperson Ayhan Bilgen read the statement of HDP HQ: “No one, even the journalists, are not allowed in our building. We urge our people to make stand against this fascistic attitude.  

Ban on Internet

  • People cannot access the social media networks like Whatsapp, Twitter and Facebook. The ban started with the detention of HDP MPs.
