Istanbul Governorship declared that 10 people were killed and 15 people were injured because of the explosion.
After the explosion that took place at 10.20, police forces and medical teams were transferred to the explosion scene. The square is closed to pedestrians.
It is stated that the explosion was very powerful and heard in neighboring districts.
President: suicide bombing
President Erdoğan made a statement on the bombing: "I regretfully condemn the terrorist attack in Sultanahmet Square in Istanbul. It is thought that this was a suicide bombing by a Syrian.”
It is reported that the explosion created a one-meter-deep hole on the square.
One of the injured died at the hospital.
Broadcast ban
One hour after the explosion, Anadolu News Ageny announced that a ban on broadcasting the explosion is imposed.
Security meeting in Prime Minister's Office
Ahmet Davutoğlu will hold a security meeting in his office. Vice Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş, Minister of Interior Efkan Ala, Minister of Health Mehmet Müezzinoğlu, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioğlu, MİT (Turkish intelligence service) Undersecretary Hakan Fidan and General Police Chief Celalettin Lekesiz are expected to attend this meeting.
