“Genocide denial” bill pending in France

French Parliament sent the bill that considers the denial of genocide as an offense to the committee for re-discussion.

The bill that was brought in by MP Valerie Boyer is returned to the committee with the request of “defining the content more precisely”.

The bill will be reexamined by the committee and put on the agenda of the general assembly.

Speaking to Armenian Weekly, European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy (EAFJD) member Hilda Tchoboian said, “The socialist majority in the parliament suggested that the bill should be returned, because the bill is improperly presented. It is thought that it must be re-written, otherwise Conseil Constitutionnel might reject it.”

Suggesting penal sanction for the denial of the genocide, this bill was criticized by some MPs on the grounds that it violates the freedom of expression.
