SGDF, the Socialist Youth Associations Federation, the target of the bomb-attack in Suruç today, had made a list of its plans for Kobani: Building a hospital, school and a nursery, a memorial forest for those who died defending Kobani, and for Berkin Elvan.
28 people have lost their lives so far in the bomb attack targeting the group of around 330 SGDF members who came to Suruç from various cities in Turkey to cross into Kobani with the slogan, “We defended Kobani together, we will rebuild it together”.
On July 17, SGDF had shared a video on facebook for their Kobani support campaign, and provided details of what they planned to achieve in Kobani.
“We have collected toys for the nursery we will build”
SGDF Co-Chairperson Oğuz Yüzgeç explained in the video that their first objective was to physically rebuild the town: “There is work to be done to rebuild hospitals and schools. Another plan we have is to build a children’s park in Kobani, we will name it after Emre Aslan, who died fighting for Kobane. We are collecting toys. We will help with the construction of the building planned as a nursery by the Kobani Canton administration. Everyone who can teach children is needed there.”
SGDF Central Executive Committee member İlke Başak Baydar spoke of the memorial forest they wanted to establish. “We will plant 500 trees for those who died during the Kobani resistance. We also want to plant fruit trees in memory of Berkin Elvan. A war museum had been built, but it was destroyed in the latest attack: We will support its reconstruction. We will also work in the library construction.”
