British academic Chris Stephenson was detained yesterday, while he was waiting in front of the courthouse for acting with solidarity with 3 academics who were taken into custody yesterday. He may be deported within 48 hours.
British academic Chris Stephenson was detained on the ground that he has HDP's invitation to Newroz celebration. Today, he was released around 12.00, but the police forces detained him again saying that they will transfer him to Directorate of Migration Management within 48 hours.
Stephenson has been living in Turkey since 1991.
Stephenson's lawyer Kemal Tuncaelli stated that the prosecutor will write a petition to the governorship with the request of deportation. The police forces haven't allowed him to leave the courthouse. His lawyer also stated that there is no information whether the investigation against Stephenson will continue.
Stephenson was in front of the courthouse for supporting his colleagues Esra Mungan, Kıvanç Ersoy and Muzaffer Kaya, who are arrested with the charge of “making propaganda for a terrorist organization”. Academics have been waiting in front of the courthouse since this morning for supporting 3 arrested academics and Stephenson.
